Handling Distance Learning Education

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

Worried about being a newbie? There’s no need to worry if you follow these simple tips to ease your transition into online education.

Make sure you have everything you need to start. Locate the computer requirements document on the school Web site. Make sure your computer fits the requirements and you have the right peripherals (printer, speakers, microphone, etc) and software (Adobe Acrobat to read .PDF files, Microsoft Word for writing papers, etc).  Once you have those things in place, make sure they all work!! (Hint: most schools provide the software as downloads from their technical support page, so check that out before you buy software).
Set aside an area in your room for your books and other class requirements and important school documents. It is important to have some organization, even if it’s just two folders — a physical one for important papers and a folder on your computer where you put all your final written papers. Put your books, some blank paper, a pen, and a highlighter all in one place. (Hint: if you are planning to use multiple computers like one at home and one at work, buy a backpack to keep all you stuff in so it is portable and handy).

Know the school landscape. Just as if you were walking around a new campus, you will need to “walk” around your virtual campus to learn where things are. Log into the school Web site with your assigned login and password as soon as possible. Click on different links to see what is available and get a real feel for your school. (Hint: Most schools hide important student information behind a firewall to protect you, so you will need to have a login and password to access it.)

The key to online classes is to read and understand.

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Remember that you won’t have all those non-verbal cues that you get in the physical classroom and neither will your instructor. This is pretty much a huge difference of online classes that from regular classroom type learnings. Also, your instructor’s role will be much less that of the distributor of information, and much more that of a guide or resource for you in exploring an area of knowledge. Almost all your information will come in the form of words. Words on the screen help the instructor “see” you much more clearly. The teaching style used in online classes may be different from the traditional college model. Taking online classes means you won’t be sitting quietly in the classroom; participation is even more essential. This type of education would best benefits those that are well not really anti-social but those people or students who would prefer learning and understanding on their own and would just ask questions whenever they really have no idea what is being explained is all about. Another key is to have a well set scheduling for you. You will set your own schedule for your online classes. Your instructor will give you the deadlines and a suggested pace to make you successful, but it will be up to you to decide when and how often to go online. Most good online students check in every day or two to see if there are new messages or discussion items. This is just a basic idea of what to expect on online classes so make sure you fully understand are well into learning before trying it out.

Thriving in a College Environment

Friday, November 14th, 2008

College is very demanding and requires a lot of time and effort to complete. And although online degrees have become popular and has been a better alternative to the traditional school, it also comes with its own challenges and problems.

In the traditional school setting, students and teachers get to see each other face-to-face and most would instantly know how to deal with bossy and irritating students. In an online setting, some students may be rude and some may even leave nasty comments on the message boards. The difference just lies in the matter where they do these things.

Clique or peer pressure as they call it also exists in online colleges. They may not be all nasty in words but it can’t be helped that there are groups that tend to dominate the forums or discussion groups of online colleges which may be unhealthy in the long run.

However, college isn’t all that nasty. In college, you start to build your network of friends and future business associates. You get to meet and mingle with different people with diverse natures and interests. Your communication and public relations skills are put to the test. You may even make friends whom you will get to grow old with in the long run. And if you are in an online university, you may even get to meet lifelong friends from a different country.

It is all matter of setting the right expectations and having the right attitude towards other people. It would be a wonderful thing if we go through college without enemies and bad feelings. It makes the college experience more exciting and more memorable.
