Vocational Courses Online

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

People taking vocational courses have increased due to the fact that most highly-urbanized countries have been seeking highly-skilled workers that can fill their services industries. Just recently, Canada and Australia has announced their need for more than 20,000 skilled workers, ranging from welders, cooks, bakers, construction workers and the like to fill their vacancies. This has given Filipinos more opportunity to work abroad to give their families better lives.

These courses are now being offered not only in traditional colleges and universities, but also online. Since there is more clamor for these courses to be offered, online universities and colleges are now starting to develop courses that are designed to address this need and some have even started offering them already. This just goes to show that schools have now seen the great potential of offering vocational courses to further their skills with proper knowledge and theoretical know-how.

It is important to know that the skilled labor market is an integral part of our business sector. The skills needed to build roads, cars, buildings and bridges can only be handled by the people willing to get their hands dirty and get the job done. Most of these people learned their skills by experience. But it is still necessary that they are made aware of the theories involved so that their skills are not only technically perfect but also theoretically correct as well.

It used to be that vocational courses have been looked down upon because of this does not lead to a full-fledged degree. However, it is important to note that our skilled workers make up the larger part of the labor market and their specialized skills are highly-needed especially by the bigger countries that rely on people from other countries for these jobs.

What Makes Studying Online Tick?

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

A lot of our educators have seen the good effects of the internet in keeping up with the demands of our times. For one, the internet is now one of the avenues where we can get educated and even get a degree that we could use for our future.

Despite the limitations that online education has in terms of interaction among fellow students and professors, this type of learning has already become popular, not only because of its practicability but also because it is now the most accessible type of learning we can have. Accredited online universities and colleges offer the flexibility of time and conservation of energy because you can study your lessons without leaving home or work. Clearly, they have become the best alternative for those who want to pursue heir dreams of getting a degree but cannot leave their other obligations behind.

There are those who would rather stay behind the limelight and just work on their tasks while there are others who are hungry for attention and feedback. Although online classes tend to lean more towards a more indirect form of interaction and communication, other people find it better and more appealing since they really need not seek the approval of other people to appreciate their tasks. However, online classes seek to raise more awareness and concern from students because feedback is very important. It is through feedback and comments that they all learn and collectively as this cultivates a culture of sensitivity and open communication among the students.

Online education has clearly arrived and it would be best to try it out and see for yourself why this has become the next best thing to traditional schooling.

Making It To The Top

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Just like any other things that we rank, online universities and colleges are also being ranked so that the public may be informed as to their options on where to take their hard-earned money to get that diploma or degree they are aiming for.

As of this year, these are the top ten online schools from the Online Education Database:
1.    Upper Iowa University
2.    LeTourneau University
3.    Libery University
4.    Nova Southeastern University
5.    California University of Pennsylvania
6.    Grand Canyon University
7.    Regent University
8.    Champlain College
9.    Westwood College
10.    Tiffin University

Of course, you may be wondering how they were ranked and what kind of metrics were used to get the ranking that they have. There were eight different metrics involved that were used to be able to come up with the A-list of online schools and they are financial aid, acceptance rate, graduation rate, peer web citations, retention rate, scholarly citations, student-faculty ratio, and the number of years a school has been accredited.

The metrics are pretty much self-explanatory. The important thing is that these metrics should also serve as our basis in finding the right school for us to invest our education in. Having a good track record in graduation rate of students is a great indicator that the school values their students and has the dedication and thrust to provide good quality education no matter the medium is – online or in-campus. Having been accredited for years indicate that the school is there to stay and they are there to provide the education we need.

Making it to the top is not easy but it is possible and doable with the right mindset and objectives.
