The future of distance learning in the Philippines

The University of the Philippines was the pioneer of what they call open universities in the country. The state university was the first to offer distance learning programs in the country. They have certification programs, bachelors’ degree programs and even post-graduate courses that can fill in the need of professionals and other out-of-school people to further their education.

Online schooling is still trying to make its way to be an alternative solution to schools here in the Philippines. For one, since education is expensive, online programs, although cheaper than courses taken in regular school, are limited and only about two or three schools offer them. The premier universities offering online degrees in the country are still developing their programs and virtual school environments. Although some may already be at par with online universities abroad, we still have a long way to go in the course offerings and course outlines readily available.

We have limited resources to fund scholarships and scholarship offerings are scarce. It would help if the government and the private sector can come to an agreement to provide, develop and find ways to finance online education to the underprivileged yet deserving individuals.

It is hoped that since we are fast becoming the front runners in providing good and high quality education in the whole of Asia, our online course offerings can finally be at par with those from international schools and that our online degrees can be made more affordable and accessible to the poor. It is also hoped that more educational institutions will be able to provide this alternative way of education to cater to the increasing needs of online education seekers.
